Inflammatory
Bowel Diseases (IBD)
Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, known collectively
as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), currently affect
0.5-1% of the Western world population. Over one million
are affected in the United States (525,000 ulcerative
colitis, 490,000 Crohn's disease) and four million worldwide.
Ulcerative colitis is restricted to the colon and primarily
affects the mucosa while Crohn's disease can affect
all regions of the gastrointestinal tract.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disease in which T-lymphocytes
play a major role.
Psoriasis affects about 18 million people worldwide,
with more than 7.6 million adults diagnosed with the
disease in the United States. Of these, about 30% or
2.3 million have moderate to severe psoriasis, affecting
the patient’s daily lifestyle. Every year, about
200,000 new cases of psoriasis are diagnosed.
